ADA Spokesperson Discusses Why Recommended Dental Treatments May Vary.
The Dr. OZ Show on Friday, Sept. 28, featured several dentists, including American Dental Association spokesperson Dr. Ada Cooper, to help patients understand why some recommended treatments may vary across dentists. The segment centered on undercover video shot in three New York area dental offices. Dr. Oz invited a panel of dentists, including American Dental Association spokesperson Dr. Ada Cooper, to help patients understand why some recommended treatments may vary across dentists and whether patients were being “scammed.” Dr. Cooper’s points are included in clip number 4, 5 and 6 located on The Dr. OZ Show website. According to Dr. Cooper, “Most dentists are really hard working, impeccably honest, and have devoted years and years of training to making sure that they’re doing what’s absolutely best and in your best interest.” They also work within a range “to determine what the best treatment is based on you and your needs and your history,” she said. Some dentists are “more conservative in their treatment,” while others are “a little bit more proactive,” said Dr. Cooper. To help patients who may be confused by treatments their dentists recommend, Dr. Cooper encouraged patients to ask questions, ask to see x-rays and pictures, and ask for alternative treatments and priorities. In addition, Dr. Cooper emphasized the importance of having a dental home, which helps a dentist make “a better prognosis of what the outcome of various treatment methods are,” so a patient can “get the best result.”
